  1. Obedience to the Ordinances of the Gospel PART 4

August 9, 2009 by Ben Tanner

    THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT
    What is it?
Our Heavenly Father made a special covenant with Abraham. It can be found in Gen. 17:4–5;Gen. 48:19. A more detailed account can be found the Book of Abraham that was translated by the prophet Joseph Smith. (Abr. 2:10-11)

This covenant was between Abraham and God. A covenant is a two way contract. Both parties are expected to fulfill promises towards each other. In the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a covenant is entered into through the ordinances of the gospel.

    The bible dictionary says:

Abraham first received the gospel by baptism (which is the covenant of salvation). Then he had conferred upon him the higher priesthood, and he entered into celestial marriage (which is the covenant of exaltation), gaining assurance thereby that he would have eternal increase. Finally he received a promise that all of these blessings would be offered to all of his mortal posterity (D&C 132: 29-50; Abr. 2: 6-11). Included in the divine promises to Abraham were the assurances that1Christ would come through his lineage, and that2 Abraham’s posterity would receive certain lands as an eternal inheritance (Gen. 17; Gen. 22: 15-18; Gal. 3; Abr. 2). These promises taken together are called the Abrahamic covenant. It was renewed with Isaac (Gen. 26: 1-4, 24) and again with Jacob (Gen. 28; Gen. 35: 9-13; Gen. 48: 3-4).
The portions of the covenant that pertain to personal salvation and eternal increase are renewed with each individual who receives the ordinance of celestial marriage (see D&C 132: 29-33). Those of non-Israelite lineage, commonly known as gentiles, are adopted into the house of Israel, and become heirs of the covenant and the seed of Abraham, through the ordinances of the gospel (Gal. 3: 26-29).
Being an heir to the Abrahamic covenant does not make one a “chosen person” per se, but does signify that such are chosen to responsibly carry the gospel to all the peoples of the earth.Abraham’s seed have carried out the missionary activity in all the nations since Abraham’s day. (Matt. 3: 9; Abr. 2: 9-11).
To fulfill the covenant God made with Abraham – having particular reference to the fact that the literal seed of his body would be entitled to all of the blessings of the gospel (Abr. 2: 10-11) – a number of specific and particular things must take place in the last days. The gospel must be restored, the priesthood must be conferred again upon man, the keys of the sealing power must be given again to mortals, Israel must be gathered, and the Holy Ghost must be poured out upon the gentiles. All this has already taken place or is in process of fulfillment.

    Pre-dates Abraham

The Abrahamic covenant actually is just another name given to the original covenant given to Father Adam. It it also called, “The New And Everlasting Covenant.” In short, this is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes all the teachings, principles, and ordinances associated with the Gospel.
This covenant was given to father Adam and passed down.
In each dispensation, the Lord has used prophets or in one case Himself to renew and restore the new and everlasting covenant. The term “New Testament” refers to the “New Covenant.” Or better said, “New and everlasting Covenant.”
What are the blessings associated with it?
The main blessings connected to the Abrahamic Covenant are:
    1. Abraham’s seed would continue in the earth so that he would be the father of many nations.
    2. His seed would have access to all of the ordinances of the Gospel like Abraham had.
    3. Abraham’s seed would eventually become as numerable as the stars.
    4. The Holy Messiah, Jesus Christ would be a descendant of Abraham.
    5. The Gospel of Jesus Christ would be preached by his seed to all the world.
    6. Because of what Jesus would do, and because of the preaching of the Gospel, the whole world would be blessed by Abraham’s seed.

The Abrahamic covenant in the New Testament
Apparently, by the time of John the Baptist there was a false doctrine circulating that twisted the original meaning of the covenant. Some believed that being a descendant of Abraham made a person better than others who were not. There also may have been those who believed that since they descended from Abraham they were pretty much guaranteed salvation without the need to repent. Lastly, the people of that time were aware that baptism was associated with the covenant of Abraham. Some may have twisted the doctrine and believed that if they were descended from Abraham, they did not need to be baptised.
John the Baptist refuted these ideas when he said:
    Luke 3:8
Bring forth therefore afruits bworthy of crepentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, dWe haveeAbraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

John is making it clear that:
    1. To be counted among Abraham’s seed you must repent. (simply being born into it won’t do)
    2. You must be baptized. ( You have to enter into the covenant yourself through baptism)
    3. God can raise up seed to Abraham from any source He wants. Literal seed is not required..

Jesus said that in order to be Abraham’s seed you must do the works of Abraham:
    John 8:39
39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were aAbraham’sbchildren, ye would do the cworks of Abraham.

Paul taught that Abraham’s blessings were actually the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The law was given for transgression:

16 Now to aAbraham and his seed were the bpromises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as
    of
many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was afour hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

18 For if the ainheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
In other words, inheritance of the Abrahamic covenant actually comes through obedience to the ordinances of the gospel.
The covenant shows the importance of Ordinances

The Abrahamic covenant contains the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The ordinance of Baptism is the ordinance of Salvation. But what of Exaltation?

It’s clear that the promises of the Abrahamic covenant include a multitude of children both in this life and the next. This requires eternal marriage. The ordinances in the temple include this blessing. They are simply the ordinances of exaltation.

Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, and the Apostle Paul all pointed to the Abrahamic covenant to show the importance of both the first principles and ordinances of salvation, and the ordinances of exaltation which includes eternal marriage. Obedience to the ordinances of the Gospel enters a person into a covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. They allow one to be an heir to the promises given to Abraham. They give you access to the atoning sacrifice and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  2. Obedience to the Ordinances of the Gospel PART 3

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SALVATION AND EXALTATION:
A Latter-day Saint believes that Jesus’ Grace will redeem everyone from the fall of Adam and Eve.

This means that every man woman and child on the earth will one day be ressurected. Also everyone will receive a kingdom of glory, except for those who activily fight against the Lord by denying the Holy Ghost. (The unpardonable sin spoken of in the New Testament. Matt 12:31)

    The Kingdoms of Glory are…

    The Telestial Kingdom (lowest)
    The Terrestiral Kingdom (middle)
    The Celestial Kingdom (Highest)

    (See 1 Corinthians 15:40)

This almost, universal salvation comes through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The salvation mostly talked about in the Bible and the Book of Mormon concerns those who will inherit the Celestial Kingdom or the Kingdom of God.

When a person is baptized and given the gift of the Holy Ghost, they enter the Kingdom of God on earth and are qualified through the grace of Jesus for the Celestial Kingdom. This person could be considered “Saved” in the sense talked about in the Holy Scriptures.

However, this person has only entered the kingdom at this point. They have only inherited the lowest degree of the Celestial Kingdom.

Latter-day Saints also believe that one can fall from this state of grace if they do not endure in faith until the end of their mortal lives. (Galatians 5:4, Matt 24:13, Mark 13:13, James 5:11, 2 Nephi 31: 16)

Now that they are in the Kingdom, there is more to do. There are three degrees of glory within the Celestial Kingdom. (D&C 131:1) The highest degree, is where God dwells.

When a person obtains this glory, it is also through Jesus’ grace, and obedience to the higher ordinances performed and entered into in the Holy Temple. This person is qualified for Exaltation, if they endure faithfully to the end.

Baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, are required to enter the kingdom of God. (John 3:5) They can be considered the ordinances of salvation. The ordianances after this are important for our growth and progression within the kingdom of God, these can be considered the ordinances of Exaltation.

God wants to save us. But He also wants to change us. He wants us to become more than we are. He wants us to be fit for His kingdom. He wants us to eventually become perfect (Matt 5:48) This is only possible through the merits and grace of Jesus Christ. (2 Nephi 2:8) Without the Savior, none of this would be possible.

But because of Jesus, we can change. We can become more. When you enter in at the gate through baptism, you then receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost as your guide within the kingdom. He sanctifies us (Rom 15:16). The Holy Ghost helps you on your journey from being saved, to changing and becoming Exalted. This can only happen if we submit our will to the will of God. (Mosiah 3:19) Then it is through His power that we are changed and become perfect.

If you would like to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and the the Higher ordinances available in the temple through the new and everlasting covanent, I invite you to come and be baptized by an authorized representative of Jesus Christ.

  3. Obedience to the Ordinances of the Gospel PART 2

July 25, 2009 by Ben Tanner

AUTHORITY FROM GOD IS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ORDINANCES:

Ordinances cannot be performed without the proper authority. That authority is the Priesthood of God.

Within the priesthood of God, there are two branches. The lesser of these is the Aaronic Priesthood which is concerned with the gospel of repentance and baptism and the temporal affairs of the kingdom of God. The Aaronic priesthood is the priesthood that was used to perform the ordinances associated with the Law of Moses. The Law of Moses was to be a school master to bring us to Jesus Christ. (Gal 3:24-25)

John the baptist held this priesthood. By it, he had the authority to baptize. But he didnt have the authority to give the gift of the Holy Ghost. This required a higher priesthood.

The higher priesthood is called the Melchizedek priesthood, which is concerned with higher ordinances and the sanctification, or cleansing of the inner man, including the giving of the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

In ancient times, this priesthood was called the priesthood after the order of the Son of God. Later it was called the Melchizedek priesthood in order to not repeat the name of deity often.

Obviously, Jesus Christ not only held this priesthood, but it originates with Him. It is His priesthood. He ordained His apostles to this priesthood and that is why they not only had the authority to baptize, but also to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost on whomever they laid hands. (Acts 8:18)

When a worthy priesthood holder baptizes someone, they are acting as a representative of Jesus Christ. In order to do this, they must be given the authority to do so. Baptism, performed by the proper authority (the Aaronic Priesthood) brings us to the gate of heaven or the kingdom of God. The Aaronic Priest(Christ) escorts us to the gate through baptism, and then the Melchizedek Priest (Christ) pulls us through the gate and gives us the gift of the Holy Ghost to be our guide on the inside of the Kingdom.

Once inside the Kingdom of God, we find there is more to do. Now begins the work of sanctification, and the saving of our families. Sanctification can only come through the Holy Ghost. All ordinances required for our progression from this point on require the Melchizedek priesthood, and the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

The ordinances associated with the Law of Moses and performed under the direction of the Aaronic priesthood, were no longer needed after Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses.

But that didn’t mean the end of ordinances. The Lord introduced the ordinances associated with the new covenant and the Melchizedek priesthood.

I explained in my last post that an ordinance is the outward expression of a covenant. Since there was a new covenant, the ordinances associated with that covenant were introduced so we could enter into that new covenant.

The name “New Testament” actually means, “new covenant.”

There are many who consider ordinances a “work” and therefore no longer needed, since the great sacrifice of our Savior. But why would God give us a new covenant, without providing a way to make or enter into that covenant?

The ordinances of the gospel are not a dead work, but they are a good work. The reason they are not a dead work is because they require the Lord’s grace and His power to be performed.

They require an actual representative of Jesus Christ who is worthy and holds his priesthood to perform them.

This priesthood exists on the earth today. The Prophet Joseph Smith was ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood along with Oliver Cowdrey, under the hands of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist actually appeared to the prophet and Oliver Cowdry and ordained them to this priesthood. Later, Peter, James, and John appeared and ordained them to the Melchizedek priesthood.

Joseph and Oliver ordained others to the priesthood. And later, Joseph was given specific keys and the authority to direct the work of the priesthood.

The priesthood, and the keys exist today in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You can have access to the new covenant. You can be baptized by the proper authority and receive the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Please talk with the missionaries today:

There is more to say about ordinances. I will continue this in my next post.

  4. Obedience to the Ordinances of the Gospel PART 1

July 12, 2009 by Ben Tanner

I once had a conversation with a good friend and co-worker of mine who belongs to another faith. We were on a business trip together in San Fransisco.
Our schedule allowed for a little time to go see some sites so we went down to Fishermans Warf. While eating lunch, we got into a conversation about how exactly one is saved.
I wanted to make sure that he understood that as Mormons we believe that it is the Savior Jesus Christ that saves us and not by our own power. While our works are necessary, they are not sufficient to save us. It is His grace that saves us after all that we can do.
He asked me a question that I think would be great to talk about here.
His question was “If you are saved by Jesus Christ, why do you have all of those ordinances in your church, including the temple ordinances?”
I think he asked this question because many people today believe that baptism (or anything else we do for that matter) is not required for our salvation. Some believe it’s Jesus that saves us and we are incapable of doing anything good on our own. Therefore, works such as ordinances are not required in their minds.
Latter-day Saints on the other hand do not believe that people are totally depraved and unable to choose anything good on our own. In contrast, we believe that God has given each person the ability to choose good or evil for ourselves.
We have inherited a fallen nature from father Adam that made us subject to all of the mortal appetites and tempatations, but we have also inherited a divine nature through the Father of our
Spirits, our Heavenly Father. These two “natures” tug and pull against each other and help us to comprehend both the evil and the good.
Latter-day Saints believe that people can choose to do good. This is why our good works are necessary for our salvation. They are necessary but not sufficient. This is because each of us still fall short and many times choose evil over good. The goal then is to put off the natural, carnal, and fallen man and become a saint through the merits of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Latter-day Saints are not only interested in being saved. They are interested in being changed, or becoming a new creature in Christ Jesus.
The big question for the true Christian is not if Jesus’ grace is sufficient to save us, but rather, how do we get access to His grace? Because if we have Jesus’ grace, we know we have salvation.
The ordinances act as a covenant or contract that binds us to Him.
The ordinances of the gospel make us partners with Jesus in the process of our salvation.
A covenant is a most solemn promise made between God and man. Both God and man make special promises towards each other.
In the case of baptism, we promise to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ, keep His commandments, and serve Him to the end. Mosiah 18:8–10; D&C 20:37) In turn, God promises
to forgive us of our sins through the atonement of Jesus Christ, spiritual rebirth, the companionship of the Holy Ghost, and eternal life.
Like baptism, each ordinance of the gospel, including the temple ordinances, is an outward expression of a sacred covanant.
The ordinances are also evidence of our faith.
James said that faith without works is dead. True faith in Jesus Christ will always manifest works meet for repentance.
The ordinances also act as powerful symbols to remind us of the covenants we have made.
The saving ordinances of the gospel are symbolic in nature. For example, when one is baptized it is a representation of the old natural man dying and being buried.
    Paul said:
    Col 2:12
12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Another symbol associated with baptism is birth of the new, faithful and holy man. During birth there is water, blood and Spirit. During Baptism there is water, the blood of Christ, and the Spirit of the Holy Ghost that is given which is called the baptism of fire, or the Gift of the Holy Ghost. (2 Nephi 31:17)
It also symbolizes the washing away of all your sins. (Acts 22:16)
We participate in the ordinances of the gospel to follow the example set forth by Jesus Christ:
The Book of Mormon prophet Nephi said it best:
    2 Nephi 31:6-10,17-21
6 And now, I would ask of you, my beloved brethren, wherein the Lamb of God did fulfil all righteousness in being baptized by water?
7 Know ye not that he was holy? But notwithstanding he being holy, he showeth unto the children of men that, according to the flesh he humbleth himself before the Father, and witnesseth unto the Father that he would be obedient unto him in keeping his commandments.
Nephi shows here that Jesus had no need to be baptized for forgiveness of sins, because he had no sin, however he still was baptized as a witness that he would be obedient to all of the Father’s commandments. This also shows that Baptism, is a commandment of the Father.
8 Wherefore, after he was baptized with water the Holy Ghost descended upon him in the form of a dove.
9 And again, it showeth unto the children of men the straitness of the path, and the narrowness of the gate, by which they should enter, he having set the example before them.
10 And he said unto the children of men: Follow thou me. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the commandments of the Father?
Nephi makes it clear that the gate by which we enter the kingdom of God is Baptism. And Jesus set an example for us by being baptised. Also, Nephi shows us that it is impossible to follow Jesus unless we are willing to keep the commandments. We may not be perfect in our attempt, but we are willing. Picking up in verse 17 it says:

17 Wherefore, do the things which I have told you I have seen that your Lord and your Redeemer should do; for, for this cause have they been shown unto me, that ye might know the gate by which ye should enter. For the gate by which ye should enter is repentance and baptism by water; and then cometh a remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.
18 And then are ye in this strait and narrow path which leads to eternal life; yea, ye have
    entered in by the gate; ye have done according to the commandments of the Father and the Son;
and ye have received the Holy Ghost, which witnesses of the Father and the Son, unto the fulfilling of the promise which he hath made, that if ye entered in by the way ye should receive.
19 And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by
the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.
20 Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life.
21 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, this is the way; and there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God. And now, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ, and the only and true doctrine of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, which is fone God, without end. Amen.
Nephi has taught us that it is impossible to follow Jesus, without keeping His commandments. He has also taught that one of those commandments is to be baptized.
Jesus himself taught this when he said:

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be aborn of bwater and of the cSpirit, he cannot denter into the kingdom of God.
Baptism and the receiving of the Holy Ghost are the gateway ordinances of the gospel, but after we have received these ordinances, there is more. These ordinances are designed to help us change and become holy, sanctified, and fit for the kingdom.

But just like we can’t keep the commandments or repent without the help and grace of the Savior, each ordinance is powerless to save and change us without His power.

This topic is way too big for one post. So I will explore it more in my next few posts.

  5. A Recent Negative Comment From An Evangelical Preacher

July 4, 2009 by Ben Tanner

Recently, I received a very negative comment from a Mr. Eli Brayley on my blog. When I set this blog up I determined that it would not be a place to argue over the scriptures, or a place of contention. I also decided it would not be an apologetic’s blog as there has already been great work for the church in this area from websites like Fair and FARMs.

So when I received the comment from Mr. Brayley, I decided to try to have a real conversation with him via email so I could try to get to the heart of his dislike for my faith.

Having served a mission for the church in the deep south, I’ve had many experiences talking with ministers, pastors, and other leaders of evangelical congregations both positive and negative.

Here are a few compliments to them.

    1. They are very familiar with the New Testament, particularly the books written by Paul.
    2. They have a zeal towards the gospel of Jesus Christ and are driven to share it.
    3. They live decent and loving lives and try to follow the example of Jesus.

Each of these compliments could be given to Eli, judging from what I could see after doing a quick Google search on him. However, I’ve found that it’s very difficult to have a conversation about God with an evangelical, without it just going in circles.

So instead of answering each of Eli’s accusations about my faith I decided to start with a few questions of my own. My questions were designed to get to the heart of what Eli believed. I really wanted to understand him before I tried to be understood.

Unfortunately, it’s been a couple of months now and I have never heard back from Eli. I don’t know why, but he has never replied to my email.

Having given the background, I wish to cite part of what Eli wrote to me and answer it in this post. I’m doing this to hopefully answer questions that an evangelical might have about my faith.

I must say that of all the offensive things that have been said about Mormons, there is one in particular that offends me more than any other. Some evangelicals try to attack Mormonism by trying to take Jesus out of it. I’ve had more than one evangelical try to attack my faith in this way. They want others to believe that we think we can work our way into heaven. They want others to believe that we think Jesus was somehow less than God.

They want others to believe that we think His grace is not sufficient.

Let me make it clear that Jesus Christ is the central focus of Mormonsim. To me, taking Jesus out of my faith would be like taking away my faith. Without Jesus Christ, nothing else matters. This is more offensive to me then even the distorted portrayal I’ve heard them give of the prophet Joseph Smith and others.

And unfortunately, this is what Eli tried to do in his comments.

Here is one example below, Eli’s words are in black. My answers will be in blue:
    __________________________________________________________________
“The Jesus of Mormonism speaks with a soft, kind voice but asks for the impossible. He lays heavy burdens on men’s shoulders which they are not able to carry.

“Matt. 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” It would seem to me that “The Jesus of Mormonism” sounds a lot like the Jesus of the New Testament.

And no Mormon can make an excuse, such as, “He knows I will fail.” “He only asks me to try.” “He knows I’m only human.” The late Prophet Spencer Kimball said concerning these excuses: “There is one crucial test of repentance. This is the abandonment of the sin… The saving power does not extend to him who merely wants to change his life… Nor is repentance complete when one merely tries to abandon sin… To ‘try’ is weak. To ‘do the best I can’ is not strong. We must do better than we can.” (The Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 163-165)

I’m very glad that Eli quoted President Kimball here. But he did it in the classic evangelical way. Notice that he got the above “quote” from picking out phrases from three whole pages of text. Eli does not point out the rest of what President Kimball said in the chapter. President Kimball wanted to point out that relying on our own power is not enough. When he said “We must do better than we can” he was pointing out that we need power beyond our own to accomplish true repentance. We need Jesus Christ. Later in the same chapter President Kimball says:

“James gave a formula for conquering: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will free from you.” (Jas. 4:7) In abandoning evil, transforming lives, changing personalities, molding characters or remolding them, we need the help of the Lord, and we may be assured of it if we do our part. The man who leans heavily upon his Lord becomes the master of self and can accomplish anything he sets out to do

Kimball is not being untrue to Mormon Scripture. 1 Nephi 3:7 removes any excuse from people who say what the Lord asks is too hard, too difficult: “For I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.” Therefore, whatever God commands He expects you to do, and you have no excuse for not doing it. Your best IS obedience. All that you can do IS all that God commands. ”

Eli has interpreted this scripture wrong. Mormons would not underplay the words “he shall prepare a way for them” notice that the “way” that the command is accomplished is through the Lord prepar[ing] a way. It is not by man’s power that it is accomplished.

    Later Nephi says
n style=”font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);”>”1 Nephi 17:50 And I said unto them: If God had commanded me to do all things I could do them. If he should command me that I should say unto this water, be thou earth, it should be earth; and if I should say it, it would be done.”

Clearly Nephi didn’t believe that if God commanded him to talk to the water and tell it to be earth that it was by Nephi’s power that it would be turned into earth. Nephi is pointing out here that with God nothing is impossible. If you put your faith in Jesus enough to act, He will provide the miracle.

    ___________________________________________________________________

I’ve only included here a small part of what Eli said. As you can see from the above his argument was that Mormons believe we have to work and obey every commandment perfectly to get into heaven. But he purposely leaves out the most important part. He leaves out the fact that we as Mormons know that we won’t be able to do it. We will and have fallen short. It is only through Jesus Christ that we will be redeemed. It is only through the power of Jesus Christ that we are able to even repent. So let me outline here if you will, what Latter-day Saints believe about grace.

According to the bible dictionary found in the official scriptures of the church, it says that Grace is “Gods enabling power.”

Let’s explore this in context with the first four principles and ordinances of the gospel.

    1. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
“1 Cor. 12:3 …and that no man can asay that Jesus is the bLord, but by the cHoly Ghost. ”

We receive our witness that Jesus is the Christ through the power of the Holy Ghost. It could be said that this is a form of grace. God enables us to know that Jesus is our Savior through His power. But to obtain this “Grace”, we must use another gift He has given us, our agency to choose. If we choose to act on our faith in Jesus, he will give us the witness of the Holy Ghost that Jesus really is our Lord and Savior.

    2. Repentance.
In order to repent we have to feel Godly sorrow for our sins, ask God to forgive us, confess our sins to God and those who we may have trespassed against, forsake our sins, and try to make restitution in so far that it’s possible. NONE of these are possible without the grace or enabling power of Jesus Christ. King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon said:

    “Mosiah 2:21-25
21 I say unto you that if ye should aserve him who has created you from the beginning, and is bpreserving you from day to day, by lending you cbreath, that ye may live and move and do according to your own dwill, and even supporting you from one moment to another—I say, if ye should serve him with all your ewhole souls yet ye would be funprofitable servants.

22 And behold, all that he arequires of you is to bkeep his commandments; and he has cpromised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land; and he never doth dvary from that which he hath said; therefore, if ye do ekeep his fcommandments he doth bless you and prosper you.

23 And now, in the first place, he hath created you, and granted unto you your lives, for which ye are indebted unto him.

24 And secondly, he doth arequire that ye should do as he hath commanded you; for which if ye do, he doth immediately bbless you; and therefore he hath paid you. And ye are still indebted unto him, and are, and will be, forever and ever; therefore, of what have ye to boast?

25 And now I ask, can ye say aught of yourselves? I answer you, Nay. Ye cannot say that ye are even as much as the dust of the earth; yet ye were acreated of the bdust of the earth; but behold, it cbelongeth to him who created you.”

We can’t even breathe without the grace or enabling power of Jesus Christ let alone have the power to forsake our sins.

e=”font-weight: bold;”>3. Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.

When baptism is performed in the right way, it must be by the proper authority. It must be performed by an authorized servant of the Lord. This is one who holds the Priesthood of God. This person cannot hold this priesthood without God’s enabling power. He cannot even be ordained to it without first having been cleansed from sin through the grace of Jesus as well.
Thus even baptism requires the grace of God.

    4. The Gift of The Holy Ghost
Obviously, one cannot receive the gift of the Holy Ghost without the enabling power or grace of God.

For the Latter-day Saint, Jesus doesn’t just save us after we qualify, He provides the power and grace for us to qualify for a remission of our sins. He requires us to give him the one gift that we can, and that is our will. Then as we submit our wills to His, he saves us line-upon-line, precept upon precept. Until He has brought us back into the presence of the Lord.

The process of salvation is a partnership with God. While our works are necessary in showing our faith, they are never sufficient. It is Him that provides the gift of Salvation. It is him who steps in and does for us what we could never do for ourselves. He steps in when we submit our wills to Him. Not because we are good. But because He loves us, and He is good.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  6. The Book of Mormon, Modern Prophets, and I Testify of Jesus Christ

June 28, 2009 by Ben Tanner

Here are a few excerpts from the Book of Mormon:

    2 Ne. 2: 8
8 Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise.

    2 Ne. 31: 19
19 And now, my beloved brethren, after ye have gotten into this strait and narrow path, I would ask if all is done? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for ye have not come thus far save it were by the word of Christ with unshaken faith in him, relying wholly upon the merits of him who is mighty to save.

    Alma 22: 14
14 And since man had fallen he could not merit anything of himself; but the sufferings and death of Christ atone for their sins, through faith and repentance, and so forth; and that he breaketh the bands of death, that the grave shall have no victory, and that the sting of death should be swallowed up in the hopes of glory; and Aaron did expound all these things unto the king

    Alma 24: 10
10 And I also thank my God, yea, my great God, that he hath granted unto us that we might repent of these things, and also that he hath forgiven us of those our many sins and murders which we have committed, and taken away the guilt from our hearts, through the merits of his Son.

    Hel. 14: 13
13 And if ye abelieve on his name ye will repent of all your sins, that thereby ye may have a remission of them through his merits.

    Moro. 6: 4
4 And after they had been received unto baptism, and were wrought upon and cleansed by the power of the Holy Ghost, they were numbered among the people of the church of Christ; and their names were taken, that they might be remembered and nourished by the good word of God, to keep them in the right way, to keep them continually watchful unto prayer, relying alone upon the merits of Christ, who was the author and the finisher of their faith.

    Moro. 10:32
32 Yea, come unto Christ, and be perfected in him, and deny yourselves of all ungodliness; and if ye shall deny yourselves of all ungodliness, and love God with all your might, mind and strength, then is his grace sufficient for you, that by his grace ye may be perfect in Christ; and if by the grace of God ye are perfect in Christ, ye can in nowise deny the power of God.

These passages are just a taste of what the Book of Mormon says about our Savior. There really isn’t enough space in this post (or even this blog) to list them all you’ll just have to read it for yourself. GET YOUR COPY OF THE BOOK OF MORMON HERE

Here are a few words about Jesus Christ from the Prophet Joseph Smith:

    Joseph Smith History 1:17-20
It no sooner appeared then I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other – “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! (Joseph’s account of his first vision where he saw Jesus Christ and God the Father.)

“And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of Him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of Him. That He lives! For we saw Him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that He is the Only Begotten of the Father- that by Him, and through Him, and of Him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God” (D&C 76:12-14, 20-24)

“Salvation could not come to the world without the mediation of Jesus Christ.”

“God…prepared a sacrifice in the gift of His own Son, who should be sent in due time to prepare a way, or open a door through which man might enter into the Lord’s presence, whence he had been cast out for disobedience. From time to time these glad tidings were sounded in the ears of men in different ages of the world down to the time of Messiah’s coming.”

“We cannot believe that the ancients in all ages were so ignorant of the system of heaven as many suppose, since all that were ever saved, were saved through the power of this great plan of redemption, as much before the coming of Christ as since; if not, God has had different plans in operation (if we may so express it), to bring men back to dwell with Himself. And this we cannot believe, since there has been no change in the constitution of man since he fell; and the ordinance of institution of offering blood in sacrifice was only designed to be performed till Christ was offered up and shed His blood-as said before-that man might look forward in faith to that time…” (Joseph speaking of the ancient practice of sacrificing animals spoken of in the bible)

“‘As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive;’ all she be raised from the dead [1 Corinthians 15:22]. The Lamb of God hath brought to pass the resurrection, so that all shall rise from the dead.”

“Christ Himself has assuredly risen from the dead; and if He has risen from the dead, He will, by His power, bring all men to stand before Him: for if He has risen from the dead the bands of temporal death are broken that the grave has no victory. If then, the grave has no victory, those who keep the sayings of Jesus and obey his teachings have not only a promise of resurrection from the dead, but an assurance of being admitted into His glorious kingdom; for, He Himself says, ‘Where I am there also shall my servant be’ [John 12:26]”

“Who among all the Saints in these last days, can consider himself as good as our Lord? Who is as perfect? Who is as pure? Who is as holy as He was? Are they to be found? He never transgressed or broke a commandment or law of heaven-no deceit was in His mouth, neither was guile found in His heart….Where is one like Christ? He cannot be found on earth.”

“When still a boy [Jesus Christ] had all the intelligence necessary to enable Him to rule and govern the kingdom of the Jews, and could reason with the wisest and most profound doctors of law and divinity, and make their theories and practice to appear like folly compared with the wisdom He possessed.”

“We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, be obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”

“The Father of our spirits [provided] a sacrifice for His creatures, a plan of redemption, a power of atonement, a scheme of salvation, having as its great objects, the bringing of men back into the presence of the King of heaven, crowning them in the celestial glory, and making them heirs with the Son to that inheritance which is incorruptible, undefiled, and which fadeth not away.”

“How consoling to the mourners when they are called to part with a husband, wife, father, mother, child, or dear relative, to know that, although the earthly tabernacle is laid down and dissolved, they shall rise again to dwell in everlasting burnings in immortal glory, not to sorrow, suffer, or die any more, but they shall be heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.”

A few words from our current prophet Thomas S. Monson say about Jesus Christ:

    />
“I declare that God lives and that He hears and answers our prayers. His Son, Jesus Christ, is our Savior and our Redeemer. Heaven’s blessings await us.”

“How grateful I am, my brothers and sisters, for the Restoration of the gospel in this dispensation and for all the blessings that have come into my life and into your lives as a result. We are a blessed people, for we have the sure knowledge that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ.”

“I pray that all of us will reflect gratitude for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His glorious gospel provides answers to life’s greatest questions: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where does my spirit go when I die? He taught us how to pray. He taught us how to serve. He taught us how to live. His life is a legacy of love. The sick He healed; the downtrodden He lifted; the sinner He saved. The time came when He stood alone. Some Apostles doubted; one betrayed Him. The Roman soldiers pierced His side. The angry mob took His life. There yet rings from Golgotha’s hill His compassionate words, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Earlier, perhaps perceiving the culmination of His earthly mission, He spoke the lament, “Foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” “No room in the inn” was not a singular expression of rejection—just the first. Yet He invites you and me to receive Him. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Who was this Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief? Who is the King of glory, this Lord of hosts? He is our Master. He is our Savior. He is the Son of God. He is the Author of our Salvation. He beckons, “Follow me.” He instructs, “Go, and do thou likewise.” He pleads, “Keep my commandments.” Let us follow Him. Let us emulate His example. Let us obey His word. By so doing, we give to Him the divine gift of gratitude. ”

I would like to add my testimony of Jesus Christ:

Growing up as a Latter-day Saint, I was taught from my youth about Him and why he is “The Way, the Truth, and the Life.” However, it’s not until I had the Holy Ghost testify to my heart about Him that I truly knew for myself that He really lives, He really died for our sins, He really will save me. I had this testimony given to me of the Holy Ghost many times as a child, but more forcefully when I read the Book of Mormon the first time.

As I’ve grown older, my personal sins and shortfalls have reinforced to me in powerful ways how much I’ve needed Jesus Christ in my life and will continue to need the power of His matchless atonement. Without Him, the entire plan of happiness would be destroyed. It is through Him, and by Him that one day I will be raised from my grave. It is through Him, and by Him that one day I will be able to enter His kingdom.

It is through Him and by Him that I am able to do anything. I love Him. I have gained access to His Grace through Faith, Repentance, Proper Baptism, the gift of the Holy Ghost, and faithfulness to his commandments.

I have gained access to Him through a broken heart and a contrite spirit. And I testify, that if you gain access to His grace and retain a remission of your sins, Jesus will bring you to Heaven. He will help you through every trial. He will lift you up when you are down. He will deliver you from your enemies. He will change you into a new creature.

He will bring you true Joy. To gain access to Him, have faith, repent, be baptized a member of His church, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and then walk in the Spirit.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  7. Follow the Prophet

June 14, 2009 by Ben Tanner

Since the days of Adam, God has followed a pattern in the way He reveals truth to His children. For truth that pertains to a specific individuals circumstances, He has given the gifts of prayer and the Holy Ghost to testify to our hearts and teach us personal revelation.

But when the truth needed pertains to the greater human family, He has called prophets to authoritatively say “Thus saith the Lord.” This is important to understand because God is not the author of confusion. He does not reveal all things to all people at once. He first chooses a righteous man who He has prepared and tested to be His prophet, and reveals the truth to him.

Then others are called to be witnesses of these truths, and then the truth is preached to the ends of the earth.

When a Latter-Day Saint uses the term “the prophet” they are not merely referring to a person who can prophesy. But rather someone who holds the keys of administration of the work of the Lord on earth. This man is not only a prophet who can prophesy of a future event, but he is also a man who is given authority by the Lord to interpret the scriptures and the past.

In addition, He can receive new revelation for the needs of today. That is why the Prophets and Apostles in the Church today are sustained as “Prophets, Seers, and Revelators.” Yes they are given the gift of prophecy, but they are also given the gift of a Seer who can translate ancient scripture if needed, and more often, interpret ancient scripture to bring out it’s original meaning.

They are given a steady flow of revelation from the Lord to guide the work of the church and kingdom of God on the Earth.

When a new revelation is given, it comes from the President of the Church who is the only man who holds all the keys and is authorized by the Lord to receive such a revelation. But after a new revelation comes, it is presented to the rest of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles so they can pray and receive confirmation from the Holy Ghost that it is indeed from our Heavenly Father.

Then the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve acting together present the revelation to the church for a sustaining vote.

Only then can the Revelation be ratified and considered doctrine of the church. This is important to understand as it can be shown that even though a man may be called of God as a prophet, Lord still allows that prophet to have his own ideas. There have been statements of different apostles and prophets about different subjects that are their own opinion and not considered church doctrine.

We have been promised by the Lord that if we follow the Prophet we will not be led astray.

This pattern is not new. It has been around since the days of Adam. In the Old Testament the prophet Amos said:

    Amos 3:7
7 Surely the Lord God will do nothing, abut he brevealeth his csecret unto his servants the dprophets.

We should prepare our selves to be close to the promptings of the Holy Ghost so that when we are asked to sustain the prophet by following His teachings, we can feel the confirmation of the Spirit of His words and follow Him to safety.

One of the great blessings of the principle of revelation is that the Lord does not expect us to just follow blindly, but to ask Him for our selves for a confirmation from the Holy Ghost of the truthfulness of the Prophets words.

That being true, I have found that this confirmation can come almost immediately, even while the prophet is speaking. I have also found that the Lord makes it quite clear that this is His church and that the Prophets and Apostles are led by Him.

Having Prophets and Apostles gives a great deal of comfort. Because of these great men we don’t have to worry about many of the questions we would have if there was no one in direct communication with God as was Moses.

We are blessed with both the ability to speak with God ourselves through prayer, and with experienced revelators who in many instances God has revealed himself just like he did the ancient Apostles and Prophets of the Bible and Book of Mormon.

The first man to hold these keys in our day was the Prophet Joseph Smith. He was blessed to open this last dispensation to prepare the world for the second coming of Jesus Christ.

His successors in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are also Prophets, Seers, and Revelators.

The living prophet today is Thomas S. Monson. I’ve included a picture of him and his councilors in this post. I’ve also included a small video of some of his teachings.

I know that he is a Prophet of the Living God. Every time I have heeded the council of the Prophets my life has been enriched and blessed.

I testify of the comfort and blessing it is to have the wise council of these brethren. I also testify that they will be a blessing to you if you will heed their warnings and instructions.

They are men of God, full of Love, full of power from on High.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

  8. Obey and Honor the Law

June 7, 2009 by Ben Tanner

In a publication of the church called “Preach My Gospel” it says:

“Latter-day Saints everywhere believe in obeying the laws of the country in which they live. Members of the Church are counseled to be good citizens, to participate in civil government and the political process, and to render community service. They do so, however, as concerned citizens, not as representatives of the Church.”
During the time of Jesus, there was a great strain between the Jews and the Roman government that held power over them. Those who were against Jesus thought up a way to catch him in a snare. They decided to ask Jesus about paying tribute to Caesar in order to put Him in an awkward situation. If He said that one should pay tribute to Caesar, he would alienate himself from the people. If He said that the people shouldn’t, then his enemies would could deliver him up to the Romans for treason.
Here is the story as it reads in Matthew Chapter 22:

16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, aneither carest thou for any man: for thoubregardest not the person of men.

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it alawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why atempt ye me, ye hypocrites?

19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.

20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, aRender therefore unto bCaesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.

22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
Jesus taught that it was important to stay true to all of your obligations, even your obligations to the government. In addition to this, the Apostle Paul later taught:

    Romans 13:1-7
1 Let every soul abe subject unto the higher bpowers. For there is no cpower dbut of God: the epowers that be are ordained of God.

2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that aresist shall receive to themselves bdamnation.

3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the apower? do that which is bgood, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

4 For he is athe minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for aconscience sake.

6 aFor for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; ahonour to whom honour.

Paul was teaching that Gods Law’s are higher than man’s. If you are striving to keep Gods laws, you will most likely already be keeping the laws of the government by default.

The prophet Joseph Smith included sustaining the law in the articles of faith of the church:

    Articles of Faith 1:12
12 We believe in being asubject to bkings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in cobeying, honoring, and sustaining the dlaw.
Joseph Smith also included a whole section of the Doctrine and Covenants which spells out the importance of upholding and honoring the law. That section is section 134. You can read it here if you would like: Doctrine and Covenants Section 134

In a revalation given to the prophet Joseph the Lord said:

    D&C 58:21
21 Let no man break the alaws of the land, for he that keepeth the laws of God hath no need to break the laws of the land.
Joseph Smith was a prophet of the Lord Jesus Christ. And as a messenger of rightousness it’s no surprise that the teachings of Joseph would agree with the teachings of our Savior and his early apostles.

If a man-made law is corrupt, it is our duty to work within the political and legal process to try to change that law. We should be active in our communities and work to protect true and virtuous principles within the structure of our governments.

I testify that the Lord will bless you as you live His laws, and sustain the laws of the government in which you live.

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

  9. The Sabbath-Day

May 31, 2009 by Ben Tanner

So what do Latter-Day Saints believe about the Sabbath Day? It’s really quite simple. What we do on the Sabbath-day, is a reflection of our Faith in Jesus Christ. In an effort to keep the Sabbath-day holy, Latter-Day Saints will refrain from shopping and participating in other commercial and sporting activities that are so common today.

We meet together in local congregations to worship the Lord, and renew our covenants we made at baptism through partaking of the sacrament, often called communion or the Lord’s supper by other faiths. We rest from our labors, and use this day to worship the Lord, and are renewed by our associations with our friends and family.

One might write a letter, visit a friend or relative, or simply take a nap. Studying the scriptures, fasting and praying are also appropriate Sabbath-day activities.

It’s a day to set apart from your normal routine, so you can focus on what is most important and be renewed.

For many, the Sabbath becomes the day they look forward to most in the week. You can truly be renewed both physically and spiritually.

In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Moroni spoke of what those early followers of Christ did on the Sabbath:

    Moroni 6:5-6
5 And the achurch did meet together boft, to cfast and to pray, and to speak one with another concerning the welfare of their souls.

6 And they did ameet together oft to partake of bread and wine, in bremembrance of the Lord Jesus.

From the time that God created the world down to the time of Jesus Christ, the Sabbath was observed on the 7th day of the week. The word Sabbath actually means “Seven.”

But Jesus Christ was resurrected on the first day of the week, or Sunday. Christians then began to observe the “Sabbath” on this day.

Latter-Day Saints also worship on Sunday. The Lord has promised great blessings to those who keep the Sabbath-day holy.

    Isaiah 58:13-14
13 ¶ If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the asabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the ahigh places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

It’s important to remember that there are circumstances where one might have to buy something on Sunday in the case of an emergency. Many of the accusations against Jesus by his enemies were connected with his observance of the Sabbath-day. Jesus clarified and put common sense into Sabbath-day worship:

    Matthew 12:1-12
1 At that time Jesus went on the asabbath day through the bcorn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the cears of corn, and to eat.

2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

    3 But he said unto them, Have ye not aread what bDavid did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the ashewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the asabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the atemple.

7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have amercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the asabbath day.

9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

10 ¶ And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

What matters most about the Sabbath-day is what is in your heart. The Sabbath is simply a way you can show your gratitude to your Lord and Savior. It’s an opportunity to love and serve your neighbor. If you commit to keeping the Sabbath-day holy, you will receive blessings in your life. It will be easier to gain answers to your prayers. It really will be “a delight.”

When I was first out of college and just started a new job my employers asked me to go with them on a business trip to Florida. This was a great opportunity for my career. One of the days we would be traveling would be on a Sunday. So I went online and looked up the directions to the congregation that was closest to the hotel where we would be staying.

Sunday came and my employers were surprised that I wanted to attend church services. They were actually quite frustrated with it. They started making jokes about how I was being like the Pharisees in Jesus’ day who had made too many rules regarding the Sabbath-day. I was surprised that they were acting like that as all I wanted to do was attend church. I hadn’t tried to make them come to church or even said anything to make them feel bad about not attending.

I just simply wanted to try and keep the Sabbath the best I could under the circumstances. I was able to convince them to let me take the rental car and attend. I was blessed with a feeling of comfort from the Holy Ghost that what I had done was right. I really had no intention of making it a big deal or trying to make my employers feel guilty.

I really don’t know what affect that example had on them, but I do know it had a great affect on me. I was blessed by the Lord for standing up for my convictions. I was blessed for keeping the Sabbath-day holy. My testimony of this sacred day increased, and I have since had more blessings than I could even recount for keeping the Sabbath-day Holy.

I testify that the Sabbath-day is just one more way you can tap into the wealth of blessings the Lord wants to give you. As we observe the Sabbath, the Lord will change you little by little and give you grace to overcome the challenges and obstacles in your life.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  10. The Power of Prayer and Scripture Study

May 24, 2009 by Ben Tanner

    Jared and Lori Tanner
When I was 14 years old I read the Book of Mormon. I didn’t read it because anyone told me to, but because I really wanted to know for myself if it was true.

I have many important memories of this time period in my life but today I would just like to talk about one as it applies to the importance of prayer and scripture study.

I was not a reader by any means. I could read, but I just didn’t like it. It was difficult to keep my attention on the words of a page. I could read them and understand them, but it just seemed like such a slow process to gain information. So I didn’t read very often, and because of this, my reading skills were lack luster at best.

However, I knew that the only way to find out if the Book of Mormon was true, was to read it and then pray and ask God about it’s truthfulness. Physical evidence, archeology, or any other kind of “proof” would not do, because each of these methods could be twisted and interpreted in different ways by different people. Just like the Bible is interpreted so differently by so many different religions and sects. In order to find the truth, one must go to it’s source. That source is God.

I decided to take it slowly and just read one chapter at a time. At the same time, my older brother Jared had just moved back into our house. He had been going through some major trials in his life and decided this would be the best thing for him at the time.

From a very young age, my Dad recognized a special spirit in Jared and called him “The Bear”. This name has importance in our family as it was given to my Great Great Great Grandfather Seth Benjamin Tanner by the Navajo Indians because if his great strength. They called him “Haustiin Shush” (Mr. Bear).

Jared has always been there for me. He has helped me many times when I’ve been in a bind. From running out of gas on the freeway, to rushing me to the hospital my first year of college with a mysterious illness. I’ve always known I could count on my brother. In fact when I’m ever asked to give an emergency contact I usually think of Jared.

Jared moved to Kanab, and my parents welcomed him back into their home. They moved him into my small room. I wasn’t thrilled about this at the time because my other brother Javen had a very large room and I thought he would fit more comfortably in that room. I believe now that they were acting under the inspiration of God. This simple decision would help change my life.

Each night I would read my chapter in the Book of Mormon and Jared would come into the room and see me. After a couple of nights I saw him reading the scriptures. I got down on my knees each night to say my prayers and then I would see him come in and kneel down at the foot of his bed and pray.

Both of us were being converted. Both of us were feeling the Holy Ghost testify that Jesus really is our Savior. God was telling us both that the Book of Mormon was true and that His church had really been restored on the earth today.

It was a sacred time for me. I was being changed. I could feel the power of the Holy Ghost in the inner most parts of my being as I read from the pages of the Book of Mormon. I knew it was true. I also could see my brother being transformed as well. He was being blessed to mend his life back together with the help of his Savior.

Then one Sunday at church it was announced that Jared would be given a calling as one of my youth leaders. Jared would now be in charge of helping with the young men my age. He had gone from a life of challenges to a life of hope and possibilities. Soon he was sealed in the Holy Temple to his beautiful wife. This means that their marriage would not only be for this life, but could last forever if they keep the covenants they made in the holy temple. They now have three wonderful children. While they have had their share of challenges, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has given them the comfort they need and the power to press forward through their challenges.

Just last week, he came by my home to help me with clogged drain. It wasn’t convenient, but he did it anyway. Not only did he help me with the drain, but he went “the second mile” and helped me clean up the mess the backed up drain and caused. He even went to so far as to buy me a new filter for my furnace. He really didn’t have anything to gain from doing all this. His motivation was pure. It was the love he has for his Savior, and his little brother.

As for me, I have a testimony and conviction that has never left me. After reading the Book of Mormon, I somehow was able to read much easier. Whether this was the result of me just reading consistently or a blessing from God I don’t know. It was probably both. I went on to read all the scriptures including the Holy Bible which I love and also know is true. I was able to use the knowledge I gained in the scriptures to help bring people to Jesus Christ as a missionary in Alabama. I know that Jesus is my Savior. I know that the Book of Mormon is His book. It’s true.

Jesus has restored His church on the earth today through prophets and apostles. If you will read the Book of Mormon and pray to know if it is true with real intent, you can also be given a testimony of it through the power of the Holy Ghost. This kind of “proof” is the kind that will stay with you. The reason is that it comes directly to your heart, from God.

It’s important after you have found out the truth of the restored gospel that you keep studying the scriptures and praying.

Prayer is not the act of us trying to persuade God to do our will. But it is the process in which we learn His will, and conform our lives to it.

Please read the Book of Mormon for yourself. Please pray to know for yourself if it is true. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Ask for your own copy of the book when you talk to the missionaries.
There is great power in prayer. There is great power in the Holy Scriptures. Both will help you in your hardest times. They will bring you to the knowledge of your Savior, and your Savior will literally save your soul.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
