The Book of Mormon was written for our day. Each sacred word was given to convince us of the reality of the Savior Jesus Christ. The prophet Mormon took from the many sacred writings of the Nephites to compile the record we have today.
He didn’t just randomly select different stories, but it was revealed to him what should be included. Mormon didn’t know what would be relevant to us today, but God did.
One example of this is the inclusion of the story of Korihor which can be found in the 30th chapter of Alma (You can read it here).
We are introduced to a man named Korihor who could easily be mistaken for Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, or Christopher Hitchens.
The difference is that Korihor came long before these men. Unfortunately, we can see that the ideas of the New Atheism are not new at all.
Here are a few of the tenants of the new atheism with the words to Korihor in the Book of Mormon presented with them to show that the ideas are the same:
? There is something called “Faith” which can be defined as unjustified belief held in the teeth of the evidence. Faith is primarily a matter of false propositional belief.
“O ye that are bound down under a foolish and a vain hope, why do ye yoke yourselves with such foolish things? Why do ye look for a Christ? For no man can know of anything which is to come.”
? Darwinism is the best explanation of how we got here.
…every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime.
? Science is the opposite of religion, and will lead people into the clear sunlit uplands of reason.
“I do not teach this people to bind themselves down under the foolish ordinances and performances which are laid down by ancient priests, to usurp power and authority over them, to keep them in ignorance, that they may not lift up their heads, but be brought down according to thy words.”
? Those who persist in believing what science gives evidence against, are deluded or deranged.
16 Ye look forward and say that ye see a remission of your sins. But behold, it is the effect of a frenzied mind; and this derangement of your minds comes because of the traditions of your fathers, which lead you away into a belief of things which are not so.
? Religion exists. It is essentially something like American fundamentalist protestantism, or Islam. More moderate forms are false and treacherous: if anything even more dangerous, because they conceal the raging, homicidal lunacy that is religion’s true nature.
14 Behold, these things which ye call prophecies, which ye say are handed down by holy prophets, behold, they are foolish traditions of your fathers.
15 How do ye know of their surety? Behold, ye cannot know of things which ye do not see; therefore ye cannot know that there shall be a Christ.
Did Dawkins and the others actually read the Book of Mormon? Did they make Korihor the Anti-Christ their hero? Probably not. But I do believe that these ideas that are being regurgitated by the New Atheists come from the came place that Korihor got them: Satan.
There I said it. I must be a delusional, deranged, cop-out to believe such a thing. I wear it like a badge of honor.
I believe that God has given us plenty of evidence that He lives. But it’s interesting that the same things I consider as evidence for God, the atheists consider evidence against God. In the chapter which deals with Korihor, the prophet Alma confronts him:
37 And then Alma said unto him: Believest thou that there is a God?
38 And he answered, Nay.
39 Now Alma said unto him: Will ye deny again that there is a God, and also deny the Christ? For behold, I say unto you, I know there is a God, and also that Christ shall come.
40 And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not? I say unto you that ye have none, save it be your word only.41 But, behold, I have all things as a testimony that these things are true; and ye also have all things as a testimony unto you that they are true; and will ye deny them? Believest thou that these things are true?
42 Behold, I know that thou believest, but thou art possessed with a lying spirit, and ye have put off the Spirit of God that it may have no place in you; but the devil has power over you, and he doth carry you about, working devices that he may destroy the children of God.
43 And now Korihor said unto Alma: If thou wilt show me a sign, that I may be convinced that there is a God, yea, show unto me that he hath power, and then will I be convinced of the truth of thy words.
ockquote>44 But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all theplanets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
45 And yet do ye go about, leading away the hearts of this people, testifying unto them there is no God? And yet will ye deny against all these witnesses? And he said: Yea, I will deny, except ye shall show me a sign.
46 And now it came to pass that Alma said unto him: Behold, I am grieved because of the hardness of your heart, yea, that ye will still resist the spirit of the truth, that thy soul may be destroyed.
47 But behold, it is better that thy soul should be lost than that thou shouldst be the means of bringing many souls down to destruction, by thy lying and by thy flattering words; therefore if thou shalt deny again, behold God shall smite thee, that thou shalt become dumb, that thou shalt never open thy mouth any more, that thou shalt not deceive this people any more.
48 Now Korihor said unto him: I do not deny the existence of a God, but I do not believe that there is a God; and I say also, that ye do not know that there is a God; and except ye show me a sign, I will not believe.
49 Now Alma said unto him: This will I give unto thee for a sign, that thou shalt be struck dumb, according to my words; and I say, that in the name of God, ye shall be struck dumb, that ye shall no more have utterance.
50 Now when Alma had said these words, Korihor was struck dumb, that he could not have utterance, according to the words of Alma.
The moral of the story? If you want to find God, look for Him in the way that God set up for you to find Him. If you look for a sign, it will most likely lead to a very bad situation for you. God will grant it to you, but it won’t be for your salvation but rather your damnation. So how has God said we SHOULD seek Him? A great passage is found two chapters later in the Book of Mormon:
27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than adesire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.
28 Now, we will compare the word unto a aseed. Now, if ye give place, that a bseed may be planted in your cheart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by yourdunbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to eenlighten my funderstanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.
29 Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.
30 But behold, as the seed swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, will not this strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow.
31 And now, behold, are ye sure that this is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own alikeness.
32 Therefore, if a seed groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore it is cast away.
33 And now, behold, because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed, and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed is good.
34 And now, behold, is your aknowledge bperfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your cfaith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your dmind doth begin to expand.
35 O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is alight; and whatsoever is light, is bgood, because it is discernible, therefore ye must know that it is good; and now behold, after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect?
36 Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed was good.
37 And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit.
38 But if ye aneglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out.
39 Now, this is not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your aground is bbarren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof.
40 And thus, if ye will not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the atree of life.
41 But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish th
e tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with apatience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree bspringing up unto everlasting life.42 And because of your adiligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the bfruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst.
There is a fool-proof way to find out if God is real. But it requires faith. If you reject the principle of faith, you will never find God, until it’s too late. You can search the universe high and low and never find what you are looking for. But if you will seek God in the way He has said to seek Him, you WILL find Him, I guarantee it.
Not in just some metaphorical way, but in a way that speaks to all of your senses, both spiritual and physical. God loves you and wants you to come to Him. The way is through faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.
If you do these things, He will reveal himself to you.
1. Jn. 3: 2
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Testimony from my wife Jessica
October 18, 2009 by Ben Tanner
“There are many things that I don’t know. Many brilliant scholars of the world could confound me with their knowledge on a wide variety of subjects. But there is something that no one, educated or uneducated, can tell me all about. And that something is my testimony. It is personal, it is tailored to my needs and it thrives regardless of the opinions of others.
I know God lives. I know His son is Jesus Christ, who is our Savior and Redeemer. I know that Jesus died for the sins of the world, that he died for my sins and that He has obtained mercy and forgiveness for me. Nothing I can do can possibly repay him for that. What I have to give in return is a contrite heart, a desire to try to live according to His teachings and a prayer that through my life, and the testimony I share, other people will want to know Him and be brought into His fold.I have read the Book of Mormon over and over again and I know that it is a book of God. It testifies of Christ and the lessons that are found in it are applicable to our time. Through prayer and the gift of the Holy Ghost I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that he was chosen to bring forth the Book of Mormon and translate it so that the world could be blessed by it.I know that the priesthood is the power of God on the earth and that the greatest blessings we can receive are made available to us through it. These blessings include to be baptized, given the gift of the Holy Ghost, receive our endowment and be sealed in the temple to our spouse and children for all eternity. I know that these ordinances can only be performed by those with proper authority.I know that revelation continues and that there is a prophet on the earth today. President Monson is that man. I have been blessed in my life by listening to and obeying the counsel of our living prophet.I know that our prayers are heard and answered. I have had prayers answered in many ways. Sometimes the answer to my prayers comes almost immediately. But many times my prayers are answered over time and in ways I wouldn’t have thought to ask for.I know that my testimony continues to thrive as I nurture it….by studying the scriptures, living the commandments, praying, repenting, remaining faithful to the covenants I’ve made and by sharing this testimony. I love the Lord, I love my family and I am eternally grateful for the tender mercies of the Lord that sustain me in the challenges, trials and hardships this life brings.I have learned how the Holy Ghost speaks to me and I know how to recognize his promptings and influence. This allows me to have the truth confirmed to my soul. It allows me to say more than I believe. I can say I know the things I’ve born testimony of.In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen” (Jessica)Category Uncategorized | Tags: testimony | No Comments

Gardening, Repentance, and Consistency
October 11, 2009 by Ben Tanner
I grew up in a small but vibrant town in Southern Utah called Kanab. We lived in three different houses in Kanab, but the one where I did most of my growing up was on 400 south. Our house was surrounded by gardens.
To the left of us, the Buttons had a large garden and a corral behind their house where they kept horses and sometimes a few beef cows. I would help take care of these animals when they were out of town.To the right of us was Lester and Ruth Johnson. They kept a meticulous yard and large garden with just about every kind of fruit and vegetable you can imagine surrounding their property.Right behind us was Thayne Smith. He also had a large garden area with a big green house and a chicken coop. He owned a nursery in town. Our yard had a pear tree, an apple tree, a grape vine hanging over the fence from the Johnsons, and, you guessed it, a large garden area. (We also had a basketball court which was awesome.)When you contrasted the red cliffs with the green gardens surrounding us it was a small paradise. But I did have to learn to work hard. My dad was incredible with his gardening skills. He was also very competitive and wouldn’t be outdone by the gardens surrounding our home.He would meticulously prepare the ground and make sure the rows he plowed were straight and even. He would cultivate the perfect soil to make sure each area of the garden would produce and yield the greatest amount of harvest. My job was to make sure the garden was irrigated (every 4 days) and that all weeds and pests were kept out. When my Dad was around, I worked hard because I knew I would be in trouble if I didn’t. But work was hard to find in Kanab so my Dad would take jobs out of state in California for sometimes months at a time. He would go and work construction for my uncle Bud’s company who did government contracts. When he left, I would sigh with relief because I thought I could get away with letting the weeds go for a while and not have to check the garden every day. One instance in particular sticks out in my mind. My Dad left and I then proceeded to let the weeds get out of control. They started to take over the whole garden. Then one day my mom told me that my Dad would be coming home the following day. I looked out at the garden and fear swept over me. I knew that if my Dad came home and saw the yard and garden in this shape, I would be in deep trouble. So I begged my Mom to let me stay home from school so I could work to get the yard and garden back in shape before my Dad came home. My mother agreed, knowing how frustrated my Dad would be and wanting him to be happy when he got home.I ran out to the garden and started to hoe down the weeds as fast as I could. As I was doing this my neighbor Lester Johnson leaned over the fence and with a big smile on his face said “Your Dad’s coming home isn’t he?”I said yes and he let out a big chuckle and went back to his work. Gratefully, I was able to get the garden and yard in good condition before my Dad came home. However there were some vegetables lost and the harvest that year wasn’t as great as it would have been.My Dad told me that the key to gardening is to check everyday for weeds and then if you are consistent with that, it will only take a few minutes everyday to keep the garden weed free. But if you let it go, the job just gets bigger and bigger, and can threaten the entire garden.Years later I have realized that the principle is the same when it comes to our individual sins. Sin, like little weeds, can sprout up daily in our lives. But if we are quick to repent, we can stay clean. Eventually, we can even eradicate the sins from our lives with the help of our Savior Jesus Christ. This requires a daily examining of ourselves, and daily fervent prayer. If we let this go, the sins like weeds will grow and grow and eventually compromise our relationship with our Heavenly Father.Sin like a weed steals the nutrients from the good plants or the good inside of us. Weeds wrap their roots around the root structure of the good plants and choke them enough to keep them from getting access to the water, then they die.Sin does the same to our souls. The more we are entangled in sin, the harder it is to access the living water that comes from Jesus Christ. But if we repent, the Master gardener will clear our lives from sin and provide the living water we need to grow.In the end, because of Jesus, we will yield a bountiful harvest. The key is consistent daily repentance, prayer and scripture study. Then when we face our Heavenly Father again, we will be pleased with how we have taken care of the stewardships He has entrusted us with.In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.Category Uncategorized | Tags: Consistency,Repentance | No Comments

Calling & Election Made Sure
September 27, 2009 by Ben Tanner
In the book of 2 Peter in the New Testament we read:
2 Peter 1:2-118 For if these things be in you, and aabound, they make you that ye shall neither be bbarren nor cunfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cann
ot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the aeverlasting bkingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. There verses are not to be taken lightly. They deal with the very important subject of making one’s “calling and election sure.”
What does this mean? For the Latter-Day Saint, this is the ultimate goal in life. It simply means that your place with God is assured. You have been given the assurance that you will not only be saved, because of the blood of Jesus Christ, but you will be exalted.
Notice that Peter is not talking to non-christians here. He is talking to members of Christ’s true church. Some have the mistaken idea that they are a “saved” christian and that once they believe in Jesus Christ they are in a state of grace that they can never fall from. If this is the case, why would Peter tell his “Brethren” of the church to “give diligence to make your calling and election sure.” ?
Once a person has been cleansed from their sins through the atonement of Jesus Christ, and has lived and entered into the first four principles and ordinances of the Gospel, they are on the path to eternal life.
But they have only begun. They need to keep pressing forward being faithful to Christ and His commandments until the end. This period of time beyond baptism is where a person goes through the process of sanctification with the help of the Gift of the Holy Ghost.
To be “Sanctified” means to be purified or free from sin: “Sanctify your hearts.”
In other words, yes you have been forgiven and cleansed from your sins, but now you need to do the work of changing your very nature so that you no longer desire sin. (with the help of God.)
style=”color:#333333;”>
There are milestones on this journey of sanctification. They are the higher ordinances of the gospel. These ordinances are found in the temple of the Lord. With each ordinance comes a great amount of promised blessings if you stay faithful to the covenants you make with the Lord.
The ultimate blessing one can receive is that their calling and election are made sure. They are assured eternal life. Eternal life is not simply going to heaven. It is not simply the blessing of living forever. These blessings are only part of the blessing of eternal life.
To obtain eternal life is to obtain the same kind of life as the Eternal Father. Literally to live with Him forever. There is no greater happiness than this. You inherit all that He has. He shares it freely with you because He has complete trust in you. You will never replace God, of course! But you can live like God, and be like God as His child and live in His kingdom through the merits and mercy of Jesus Christ.
If you notice the scripture above, Peter gives a specific formula for someone to progress to this point.
The order according to Peter is to be diligent then to add faith, then add virtue, then add knowledge, and temperance, patience etc.
It is not enough to overcome sin, but you must add these specific attributes to your character. The ultimate attribute being charity. (just has Paul said faith, hope, and charity).
God is doing more with us than just saving us, he wants to change us. But He will not change us unless we are willing.
So if you ever ask a Latter-Day Saint if they are “saved” they might look at you a little perplexed. This is because in their minds they are thinking.. well, yes I am saved in that I will automatically be resurrected and I have been baptized so I do have the promise of eternal life if I stay faithful to the promises I’ve made with the Lord, but I’m not exalted yet. I’m not sanctified yet. I’m repenting and relying on the merits of Jesus as I try to change my heart with His help.
Please note here that Latter-Day Saints do not believe that will power alone will change their natures. We understand and know that it’s through the power of God that this change takes place, but we also understand that God expects us to try. He wants us to do all we can while relying on the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I testify that there are greater blessings, enjoyment, and fulfillment found within the Church of Jesus Christ. I testify that our purpose is not to just meet together for social reasons. We are being led by the head of the church, even Jesus Christ towards our ultimate goal. That ultimate goal is to regain the presence of the Eternal Father and to become like Him.
I also testify that you can receive the assurance that your calling and election has been made sure. I invite you to start on the path by showing your faith in Jesus Christ, repenting, and being baptized.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.Category Uncategorized | Tags: Calling & Election Made Sure | No Comments

Love, Zion, and Home Teaching (talk I gave in Sacrament meeting today)
September 19, 2009 by Ben Tanner
Good morning brothers and sisters I am grateful for the opportunity to speak to you today. It’s always difficult to speak after Jessica because she is able to bring the spirit in so strongly. But I’m very happy to be speaking on a such an important subject.I would like to start by reading an incredible scripture that turned the world, as it was then, upside down.
In Matthew Chapter 22 verses 35-39 we read:
35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. With these powerful words Jesus summed up the entire law.
Let’s start by talking about the first commandment… Loving God.
The apostle John the beloved said in 1 Jn. 4:19
19 We love him, because he first loved us.God has given us every reason in the world to Love Him. He created us, He helps us in our daily lives, and He redeems us through the matchless atonement of His Son Jesus Christ.
He has given us every opportunity to succeed. Just like a Child cannot comprehend the love their parents have for them, we cannot fully comprehend His love for us.
The way we come to Love God is through experiencing the Atonement of Jesus Christ for oursleves. We experience the atonement by excercizing faith, repenting of our sins, making a special covenant such as Baptism or renewing our covenants through the partaking of the sacrement, and recieving the Holy Ghost in our lives.
Alma asked the question:
Alma 5:26
26 And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?Your personal answer to this question makes all the difference in the world in your ability to feel true love towards God. When we feel of His redeeming Love, we will naturally Love Him back. That Love will motivate us to not only Love God, But our to love our neighbors.
If you want to experience the Love of God, it is there for the taking if your will excerise the atonment in your life.
That brings us to the second great commandment.. that of loving your neighbor.
Consider the story of Enos in the Book of Mormon.
His first concern was for the welfare of his own soul, but after he had recieved forgivness of his sins, he immediately was concerned about his bretheren.
In James 2:18 it says:
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. So good works are a natural outgrowth of our faith and our love in and for God. If we have true faith in Jesus, have repented, and made the proper covenants we are entitled to the
gift of the Holy Ghost in our lives… then as the apostle Paul taught in Galatians chapter 5 we gain the fruits of the Spirit. Namely, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, and faith. These attributes spring up out of us like a well of living water as we follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost.
In the Gospel of Jesus Christ Love should be our ultimate motivation for doing good works. If we are doing good works for any other reason, we will soon tire of it.
I would like to apply these principles to a very specific good work that is Home and visiting teaching.
The larger goal of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been talked about from the begining of the restoration. That goal is simply to establish Zion.
Zion is the gathering place of those who truly Love God and truly love their neighbors.
I believe that this ward has the greatest potential to establish Zion than any other ward I have ever lived in.
Let’s be united in our effort and become one as a ward so that we can truly establish Zion. The Lord said, “If ye are not one, ye are not mine.”
The bench is deep in this ward. We have a high level of people who are motivated by the love of God.
Let’s use that Love to motivate us to action. Let us turn our hearts towards God and towards each other.
Brethren, let’s live up the our privileges as priesthood holders and lead the ward in service and care towards our home teaching families. The Home teaching program has been around in different forms since the early days of the church.
In the Doctrine and Covenants it describes some of the duties of an Elder:
D&C 20:42
42 And to teach, expound, exhort, baptize, and watch over the church;Interestingly, President Monson, our current Prophet, was on the committee that was put together by President David O. Mckay that organized the Home Teaching program of the church as we have it today.
Doing our home teaching or visiting teaching is an excellent way that we can show the Lord we are willing to follow His living prophet on the earth.I have had some of my most sacred experiences since my mission while doing Home Teaching. Other than in your own home, Home teaching will provide you with more opportunities to use the priesthood than any other setting I know of.
I was blessed to have a father who was a great home teacher. I used to marvel at how much he knew about each family he home taught. He was often given the hardest assignments.
He would memorize birthdays, names, and other events. He would reach out in love and end up re-activating many different families in the ward. More importantly, he helped others either make or renew sacred covenants with the Lord through the Ordinances of the gospel.
His influence has followed me in the church. When I first moved into this ward I went home teaching with brother Watson to a member in the ward. When they heard my last name they asked if I was related to Ron Tanner.
I told them yes that’s my Dad. Then they went on to say how much they love him and the he had been a great influence on them in a previous ward they had lived in.I was proud to be his son that day. But what was more surprising was that I could instantly feel Love from that member in our ward. I could see the Love in their eyes as they spoke of my Dad.
I had felt that love before and recognized it as the Love of God. God had loved my Dad, my Dad took that love to his neighbors, and now I was feeling that same Love extended towards me.
Brothers and Sisters, there are people in our ward that need to feel that love. You don’t need to have a father who was a great home teacher to become a great home teacher or visiting teacher yourself.
There are people among us who need the redeeming love of the Savior in their lives. They need access to the ordinances of the gospel and to feast at the table of the Lord. There are others who are amoung us today who just need a helping hand, or someone to help shoulder their burdens. If you have felt the redeeming love of our Savior, please extend that Love to your neighbor through the Home and visiting teaching programs of the church. President Ezra Taft Benson said that Home Teaching is not just an assigment, it is a sacred calling.
As I have loved you, love one another. This new commandment, love one another. By this shall men know, ye are my disciples. If ye have love, one to another.
In The name of Jesus Christ, amen.

The Sacrament
September 13, 2009 by Ben Tanner
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in aremembrance of me.25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this abread, and drink this cup of the Lord, bunworthily, shall cbe dguilty of the body and blood of the Lord.29 For he that eateth and drinketh aunworthily, eateth and drinketh bdamnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. After a person is baptized a member of the church of Jesus Christ, and has recieved the gift of the Holy Ghost, they are eligable to partake what some churches call “The Lord’s Supper, or Communion.” Latter-day Saints call this sacred ordinance “The Sacrament.” Jesus Christ said to do this “In rememberence” of Him. We gain some additional insight about this sacred ordinance from the Apostle Paul who gave us the scripture quoted above.
Paul tells us that partaking of the bread and wine is not a light thing. A Christian should not partake unless they do so worthily. In fact Paul goes so far as to say that if a person partakes unworthily, they are “guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.”He also councils that a person should “Examine themselves” before they partake of these sacred emblems. This is strong language. If you are a Christian who believes in the idea that one cannot fall from grace these verses should give you pause. Some Christians read these verses and try to twist them to mean that Paul is talking about people who haven’t been “saved.” But that is not the case. Paul is talking to the members of the Church here. It’s clear that once one has entered the gate through Baptism, they are not done. There is more. They have entered into the straight and narrow way… now they need to press forward keeping the commandments of God.If a baptised member of Christ’s church falters in sin (which WILL be the case) then they will need to repent before they can become “worthy” to eat and drink the emblems of the sacrament again. Once a person has entered the kingdom through Baptism, they then take the Holy Ghost as their guide in the process of sanctification.God not only wants to save us, but He wants to change us. He wants us to become like Him. After baptism, we continue to have faith in Jesus, repent of our sins, and instead of being re-baptized, we partake of the Sacrament to renew the covenant we have made with God at Baptism. But repentance must come first. This is what Paul is talking about. In order to be “worthy”.. we must be living in a way that keeps us firmly within the bounds of the grace of Jesus Christ. We must keep the commandments and always have an attitude of repentance in order to progress and become more like the Lord. The Book of Mormon gives us additional insight….Mosiah 4:11-1211 And again I say unto you as I have said before, that as ye have come to the knowledge of the glory of God, or if ye have known of his goodness and have atasted of his love, and have received abremission of your sins, which causeth such exceedingly great joy in your souls, even so I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your owncnothingness, and his dgoodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of ehumility, fcalling on the name of the Lord daily, and standinggsteadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel. We need to be in a position where we have “retained a remission of our sins” in order to be considered worthy to take the sacrament. The question then comes “How do I know if I’m clean?” The way you can know is based on your ability to feel the Holy Ghost guiding and directing you in your life. The Holy Ghost will not be with you if you are living contrary to the commandments. You will know that you need to “examine” youself, and repent in order to partake of the great feast and renew your covenants with the Lord.As you conform your life closer and closer to the Lord, with His help (because it is impossible without His help) you will find that there is more and more that needs changing. More and more to overcome. The most important commandment you can keep is the one that you are not keeping right now. Those who believe in a “once saved always saved” must wonder, “why am I still here on earth if all is done?” The answer is because all is not done. There is changing, growing, loving, and living to do. There is the process of santification, there are furthur covenants to make to seal your family together forever, there is the refining fire to go through. The sacrament gives us this glorious opportunity to examine oursleves, to repent, to retain a remission of our sins.None of this is possible without the grace of Jesus Christ. But because of Him, it is possible! You can change! You can make old wrongs right. You can become completely clean. You can become a new creature. You can overcome your desires for sin. You can become Holy.In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.Category Uncategorized | Tags: communion, the lords supper,The Sacrament | No Comments

Infant Baptism
September 6, 2009 by Ben Tanner
Infant Baptism is practiced in many different Christian sects and denominations. Latter-day Saints do not practice infant baptism. The main reason we do not practice infant baptism is because we do not believe that babies are born inherently evil, that is we do not believe in the idea of “original sin.”
Instead we believe that babies are born innocent, clean and pure. Each child is not accountable for the sin of Adam and Eve and can only be judged by their own choices. In addition to this, we do not believe that a child is accountable for sin until they have reached the age of Eight. This age has been given by revelation as the age of accountability. These wonderful babies are found completely within the bounds of Jesus’ grace. If a child dies before the age of accountability they are automatically saved through the merits and mercy of Jesus. The New Testament has no record of Jesus or any of the Apostles baptizing infants. However there is an account of Jesus blessing the little children. This is the pattern that Latter-day Saints follow. When a child is born to members of the church, they are usually given a blessing by their father (if he is worthy and holds the Priesthood) or by another worthy Priesthood holder. These blessings are usually done in front of the congregation with the baby surrounded by worthy priesthood holders and one of them acting as voice. The baby is given a name and a blessing. The details of the blessing are given to the one acting as voice by the gift and power of the Holy Ghost.Later, after the child has grown, and has been taught the gospel of Jesus Christ, they are given the opportunity for Baptism when they turn Eight. This allows for several things:1. Babies who die before they are accountable are automatically saved2. Children are given a chance to learn the Gospel and accept it for themselves.3. Children are not accountable for Adams transgression.Who can hold a new born baby and not feel that this baby has just come from Heaven above?Who can hold a new born baby and say the child is evil? It is an evil doctrine to believe so, and the scriptures do not support it.This morning I had the wonderful opportunity to stand in the circle and participate in the blessing of my little niece Ada Mae Lisonbee. She is so precious. So beautiful. And so clean. I got to hold her for a little bit. I looked her in the eyes and could see nothing be purity and love.Children are clean, and pure, and wonderful. They have no need of Baptism until they can make their own choices.I testify of this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.Category Uncategorized | Tags: Infant Baptism | No Comments

A Couple of Great Links on Baptism for the Dead
August 30, 2009 by Ben Tanner
I’m going to be lazy this week.. and simply point you to two articles I’ve come across about Baptism for the Dead. The first is by Hugh Nibley and can be found here:
Baptism for the Dead in Ancient TimesThe focus of this paper is about evidence for the practice in the original church that Jesus Christ established.
The second is by Jeff Lindsay, a Latter-Day Saint blogger on the subject:
FAQ: Baptism for the DeadBoth are worth a read. My wife and I taught a group of 15-16 year old youth today at church on this subject. These articles were very helpful in preparing.
Enjoy!

Mormonism F.A.Q
August 23, 2009 by Ben Tanner
1. Are Mormons Christian?
YES! Mormons believe the divinity of Jesus Christ. We believe He is the God of Israel. We believe He really did die for our sins and that without Him there would be no salvation. He is the way, the truth and the light. He was crucified for our sins and He really did rise again on the third day. Jesus is the creator of the heavens and the earth and all things. He is God. We worship Him with all our hearts, minds, might, and strength.2. Are Mormons Racist?
No. Racism is resoundingly condemned in the church. It is true that there was a time when people of African decent were restricted from the priesthood. To understand this more fully please go to this link: Blacks And the Priesthood3. Do Mormons practice polygamy?
No. Current Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints do not practice polygamy. Men are allowed to legally marry only one woman. The church stopped the practice of polygamy over 100 years ago. There are other churches that claim to be break-offs of our church that practice polygamy today. However a true Latter-day Saint would be excommunicated for practicing polygamy. If a married man is widowed by the death of his wife, and he can marry again in the temple. Technically this would have him sealed to two women at once, one living and deceased. That would be the only situation in the church where a man is technically married to two women at once. It is not clear how this situation will be ironed out in the next life.4. Do Mormons think they can work their way to heaven?
Absolutely not! Mormons believe that without the grace of Jesus Christ everything we do would not only fall short, but it wouldn’t even come close to getting us into heaven. We do believe that our works are necessary to show our faith in Jesus Christ. But our works in themselves will never be enough. Many of our works will condemn us. But through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and sincere repentance we can be made clean through His merits and blood. The Book of Mormon teaches that we can’t even breathe without the grace or enabling power of Jesus Christ.5. Do Mormons believe they can become Gods?
Mormons believe they can become like God through the merits, mercy, and grace of Jesus Christ, and through the sanctifying power of the Holy Ghost. We believe that one of the reasons we were sent to earth in the first place was to be given an opportunity to progress and become more like our Father in heaven. Just like we send our children off to college to gain an education and become more like us, God has sent His children here to earth to gain an education. Some will graduate with honors and some will not. God will be the judge. Perhaps some day, long after this life, some will become like our Heavenly Father. Not to replace Him, but to live the life He lives, in a family situation. We could never be exactly like God in that He has never sinned. However the Atonement of Jesus Christ makes it possible for our sins to be forgiven, and for us to change. We can change even to the point that we are like our Father in Heaven. We can become “Joint-heirs” with Jesus Christ (Romans 8:17)6. Do Mormons believe that Adam was God?
The so-called “Adam-God Theory” is false doctrine. It is not the doctrine of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church teaches that the Godhead consists of God the Father (the Father of our Spirits), Jesus Christ (The Son, Creator, and Redeemer), And the Holy Ghost (the Testator, Revelator, and Sanctifier). There are some references by second and third party sources that Brigham Young taught the “Adam-God Theory”. It is not clear in what context or exactly what brother Brigham was talking about. For any idea to become doctrine of the church it must be given by revelation from God to His prophet, ratified by the 12 apostles and sustained by the members of the church. This idea was not. Prophets who have succeeded Brigham Young have clarified that the idea that Adam was God is false doctrine and not the belief of the church.7. What is the role of women in the Church?
Women are honored and revered as equals to men in the church. Women do not hold the priesthood. They do not need to hold it. For a man to be exalted, he must hold and honor the priesthood. A man also cannot be exalted in the highest kingdom of heaven without being sealed to a woman for time and all eternity. Women are the final and most wonderful creation of God. Mormons look at the role of women differently than most of our culture today. While the world denigrates the idea of a woman nurturing and and raising children as almost slavery, we believe that when a women is able to act in this capacity, she is expressing her God-given abilities of both creativity and love. There is nothing more noble and beautiful than a loving mother. (See the proclamation on the family)8. Do Mormons hate gay people?
No! Mormons do not hate anyone. Mormons are taught to love everyone as a beloved son or daughter of God no matter what their situation in mortality is. Mormons believe that any sexual act outside the legal bounds of marriage between one man and one woman is a sin. This is true regardless of sexual orientation. This means, adultery, fornication, and same gender sexual relationships are all sins. There are worthy members of the church who experience same-gender attraction but choose to turn away from those temptations and live the standards given by the Lord himself. By refraining from same-gender relationships and any sexual activity outside of marriage between a man and a woman, these members can worship in the Temple and have the full blessings of the Gospel. The same is true for any member struggling with any sexual temptation. Although the church does not endorse political parties or specific politicians, it does reserve the right to speak up on matters of morality. That is why it was involved with the proposition 8 question in California. We believe that marriage should be defined between one man and one woman.9. Do Mormons believe that all non-Mormons will go to Hell?
No! Mormons believe that in the end, almost everyone who has ever lived on the earth will obtain a kingdom of glory and beauty. There will only be a few people, called the “Sons of Perdition” who along with Satan and his demons will not obtain a kingdom of glory. These are people who have committed the unpardonable sin spoken of by Jesus Christ in the New Testament. (Matt 12:31) However if one desires to obtain the Kingdom of God, or Celestial Kingdom, they must have faith in Jesus Christ, repent of their sins, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, and endure faithfully to the end of their lives.10. Do Mormons believe Jesus and Satan are brothers?
Mormons believe that God is the Father of ALL creation. God is the father of all spirits. However, each spirit has his or her own free will. They can choose good or evil. All spirits are brothers and sisters and God is the Father of all of them. Jesus Christ is the first born and the only begotten of the Father in the flesh. He has never chosen evil and never will. He has used His free agency to do good and is a member of the Godhead. As the bible teaches, Satan was also one of Gods spirit children and was an angel who rebelled against God and is fighting against Him today. Now, Satan is a fallen angel. (see Isa. 14:12)11. Are the Ordinances in the Temple just ripped off from Masonry?
No! What we do in the temple is too sacred to talk about in this post. Mormonism is a restoration of the original church of Jesus Christ. Although there was a great apostasy it does not mean that all things that Jesus taught were wiped off the face of the earth. It just means that there are derivatives and apostate forms of the gospel and it’s ordinances found all over the earth. Some elements of the fullness of what Jesus taught can be found in Protestant faiths, Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Masonry, Native American religions, Shintoism, Hinduism, and even Yoga to name a few. Joseph Smith restored the fullness of the Gospel in it’s purity. That is what is found in the temple.12. Does DNA prove the Book of Mormon false?
No! DNA does not prove the Book of Mormon false. There are many evidences for the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. click here to read more: DNA And The Book Of MormonOf all the questions about Mormonism, the most important question of all is this:
Is Mormonism true? Was Joseph Smith really a true prophet of God? Is the Book of Mormon God’s word? Is Jesus really the Christ?
You can find out if you will humbly ask God in prayer, with the real intent to know the answer. I testify that it is true. It is the church of Jesus Christ.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Thomas S. Monson: Prophet, Seer, and Revelator
August 16, 2009 by Ben Tanner
Today I would simply like to share with you my witness that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God. It’s true that most of my life President Monson has been in the first presidency of the church.
I have heard him give hundreds of sermons and talks sharing his special apostolic witness that Jesus is the Christ. He has shared story after story that have invoked the Spirit of the Lord into my life. Most of his Stories have to do with expirences he has had while serving others. He is quick to follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost.I knew that Thomas S. Monson was a prophet of God before he was called to be the president of the church. However, during the General Conference held just after President Monson was called, I could see a transformation in President Monson. The mantle had surely been passed on to him. To me, it looked like he had been through some experience that had illuminated him even more. This wasn’t an experience that made me know he was a prophet, I already knew that. But instead it was a conformation of what I already knew. The very same keys that our Savior Jesus Christ gave to Peter are on the earth today. They are in the capable hands of the Prophet Thomas S. Monson.I testify that God speaks through president Monson. I know that he is an instrument in the hands of the Lord to guide and move the work of the Lord forward.May the Lord bless President Monson. May He bless you with your own witness that Thomas S. Monson is the Lords oracal on the earth today. In the name of Jesus Christ, AmenCategory Uncategorized | Tags: and Revelator,Seer,Thomas S.
