  1. How Apple, Google, Facebook & Microsoft are Changing Christianity

May 20, 2013 by Ben Tanner

imagesIn the 1450’s Johann Gutenberg used his printing press to print a Latin version of the Bible (the first book ever printed on the press).   Now the Bible and other books could be reproduced in mass and the good word could get to the people.  Spurring on the protestant reformation, holding priests to account and causing drastic changes the expression of Christianity.

Fast forward to today and the changes continue. Gallup reported that U.S. confidence in organized religion has hit a low point.  Could tech be playing a role in the decline of confidence American’s have in organized religion?

Google, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft don’t have a hidden agenda when it comes to Christianity, but their technologies are certainly making an impact on it. Today it’s easy to download the Bible to your smartphone, or tablet and get different translations, cross references and commentary.  Thin, stylish cases and keyboards for smartphones and tablets allow believers access to the good word wherever they are. The scriptures are more accessible and there are more tools to understand them than ever before.  For some people, this means they no longer choose to rely on their pastor or priest to understand the scriptures. For other’s however it only strengthens their tie’s with organised religion.

Tiffini Wilcock, a Latter-day-Saint says that it has increased her faith – “Everything is accessible right there. I love it, It’s blessed my life!”

Kristy Rhodes, a lay Christian says “I see way too many people using their smartphones and tablets during worship services playing games or doing other things that have nothing to do with church. I keep wishing that everyone would put them away.

Perhaps it’s a double edged sword for believers.  Easy access to spiritual material, and easy distractions that can interrupt spirituality.  Zach Burton, another Christian says “Being completely honest, I would say it has hindered my growth. Sure, I have access to all the “tools” on my phone. But do I study (my scriptures) more because of that? Not necessarily.  I was with my kids on Saturday and I took a moment to look around. Half the parents were on their phones and were oblivious to their children. I would say that affects ones “spirituality” more so than reading or not reading scriptures on their smartphone. Isn’t the reason we read is to improve? I am guilty. I waste time on my smartphone. I am somewhat shocked that its so hard to admit.”

Apparently, technology like money can be used for both positive and negative ends.

But how congregations worship is not the only way technology is changing Christianity.  Social media is being used to create a sense of community like never before.  Church leaders are able to interact with parish and congregation members in their everyday lives, not just on Sunday.

Many congregations are creating special Facebook groups and Google hangouts to not only interact with each other, but to engage in the larger community around them.  “We created a neighborhood Facebook group so we could reach out and create real relationships with people in our neighborhood who don’t share our faith” said Joseph, a missionary for his church.  “We wanted to make sure that our neighbors know that even if they don’t share our faith, we still want to be great neighbors and friends with them.”

Religious conversations are heating up all over social media.  A quick search for “Jesus” on Google plus will produce an almost never-ending stream of conversations about Christianity. Indeed, there is so much faith based conversation in social media that some are calling it the new “burned over district” a reference to the religious scene in the western and central regions of New York in the early 19th century, where religious revivals and Pentecostal movements of the Second Great Awakening took place.

With all of the dialog, Christianity is changing to a more individual faith for some and tighter knit communities of faith for others.

The big tech companies are definitely having an impact.  Much like Gutenberg’s printing press, technology will continue to play a role in how Christians worship, study and even interact with other faiths.

  3. REPENTANCE AND ENDURING TO THE END

May 6, 2013 by Ben Tanner

maryjaneduketanner(My mother’s notes from a talk she prepared and recently gave in her ward.)

    1. Repentance begins with Testimony.

    2. What is your reason for being here in Sacrament meeting today?

    3. Is it because it’s required by the Lord?

    4. Or you’ve been taught that you must be here?

    5. Or your parents told you it is the right thing to do?

    6. Or you need to partake of the Sacrament? If so why?

    7. All of these reasons are all good reasons. But they are not enough. We should be here today because of our love for Our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ and because we choose to do Their will. We should be here to nurture our Testimonies however strong or weak they may be.  As we grow line upon line and precept upon precept, we need to know that Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ are real and perfect people, with bodies of flesh and bones and that they love us with a perfect love and that they know us personally. They know our needs and They know our hearts. They watch our actions.   They know by our actions how much we really love them. They know that we are mortal beings with weaknesses and that our test in this life is to repent of those weaknesses and that the more Light and Truth we take in will enable us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ to conquer our sins and bring our bodies and minds into subjection with Their Will. And as we grow in Testimony through study, prayer and keeping the commandments, we gain more strength to repent of our sins. Thus Testimony is the beginning of Repentance.

    8. President Uchtdorf has said: “Compared to God man is nothing. Yet we are everything to Him.”

    9. Our Heavenly Father knew we would need a “Savior” so He sent his only begotten Son to come to this Earth to atone for our sins. Jesus Christ was chosen before the world was to come and suffer pain unimaginable for the sins of the World.  OUR SINS. As He accepted this responsibility, He knew what He would have to suffer; and yet he said “Thy will be done Father and the Glory be thine”

    10. I know of many areas where I could do much better in doing His will and where I need to improve. And I also know that coming to church
each week and partaking of the Sacrament (which is a re-baptism) helps me in all areas of my life to become stronger. We need the reminding
strength of the Sacrament of our Savior and His sacrifice to bring us more fully to humility and Repentance. Many of you have heard me say that
“There is no such thing as living the gospel out side the Sacrament.” Partaking of the Sacrament prompts us to repentance and our need to try a
little harder each week. Our Savior loves us not so much because we are good, but because He is good. And as we strive to overcome our weaknesses each week, we can become more refined, like Him and have a stronger desire to serve and love our fellow man.

    11. Elder Meridith of the Seventy told a group of Missionaries: “ We don’t aspire to be mainstream Christians, we aspire to obtain Truth.”

    12. As we come each week and fulfill our callings and seek knowledge and partake of the Sacrament, our souls are taking in more light and truth. We must embrace this great opportunity to grow spiritually and feel after the enlightening power of the Holy Ghost.

    13. “ In reality, everyday is a day of judgment.  Stored in our body and mind is a complete history of everything we have done. We speak, think,
and act according to CELESTIAL, TERRESTRIAL OR TELESTIAL LAW. Our faith in Jesus Christ, as shown by our daily actions, determines which
kingdom we will inherit. (see Romans 2:15).

    14. It kind of shakes you up a little when you hear this because from day to day we are all tempted and tried and sin can be very suttle. I found this little poem called “SIN” by Lisa J. South in the Ensign:

    15. A little blue flower—It didn’t belong in my garden, but it looked so appealing, smelled so sweet. What could it hurt to leave it? Pretty blue
bells, deep green leaves on dainty, curling stems that slowly, silently choked the life out of my lilies.

    16. In order for us to progress we must have opposition in all things to exercise our agency.

    17. Elder Nelson said in our recent general conference: Satan wants to lure us to sin.  Guilt is to our spirit is as pain is to our bodies. (un quote)

    18. I believe repentance gives needed relief.

    19. Brigham Young has said: “When men truly and heartily repent, and make manifest to the heavens that their repentance is genuine by
obedience to the requirements made known to them through the laws of the Gospel, then are they entitled to the administration of salvation, and no power can withhold the good spirit from them.

    20. The eye, the ear, the hand, all the senses may be deceived, but the Spirit of God cannot be deceived; and when inspired with that Spirit the
whole man is filled with knowledge, he can see with a spiritual eye, and he knows that which is beyond the power of man to controvert.

    21.  All the angels in heaven are looking at this little handful of people, and stimulating them to the salvation of the human family. So also are the
devils in hell looking at this people, too, and trying to over throw us, and the people are still shaking hands with the servants of the devil, instead of sanctifying themselves and calling upon the Lord and doing the work he has commanded us and put into our hands to do. When I think upon this subject, I want the tongues of seven thunders to wake up the people.

    22. In Galations Chapter 3, after Paul the apostle’s conversion, on one of his first preaching assignments he had taught the people of Galatia
that the Law of Moses was fulfilled and not to practice it any longer. Then when he visited them again they were still practicing the law…because they were afraid to let their families experience agency. They were afraid to take off the training wheels or do away with “spiritual busy work.”  Paul chastised them and said “Oh foolish Galations, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey truth.

    23.  Even though Laman and Lemual saw many great and marvelous miracles…they would not seek for a testimony and therefore they could
not truly repent. Testimony is the beginning of Repentance. We are here on earth to take upon us a body of flesh and blood to be tested and refined, to prepare us for Exaltation and Eternal Life. The way will not always be easy. But we can make it and I rejoice as I see people in my life having experienced many trials that have truly brought them to their knees hanging on with even more gratitude for the Gospel because they say their trials have brought them closer to Christ.

    24. Elder Jeffery R. Holland said: “Everyone has times when we need to know things will get better….My declaration is that this is precisely
what the Gospel of Jesus Christ offer’s us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is
happiness. DON’T YOU QUIT. You keep walking,

You keep trying. It will be alright in the end.  Trust God and believe in good things to come.  Some blessings come soon, some come late,
some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ, they come.

    25. Matt. 11: 28-30 is one of my favorite scriptures: “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

    26. I rejoice that in these latter days we have the pure gospel of Jesus Christ and the comforting power of the Holy Ghost to guide us through
trouble and gloom. I know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true and that We have a living Prophet, even President Thomas S. Monson to guide us here on this earthly journey, and that the scriptures bring us Light and Truth as we strive to follow the plan of Salvation. I am also so grateful for my Heritage in the Gospel. My wonderful ancestors sacrificed so much to bless my life with truth and I pray that I will always cherish that great gift and not sell my birthright for “a mess of pottage”. That we may endure to the end in righteousness and remember that testimony is truly the beginning of Repentance, and through our many trials and mistakes, Our Savior is there to lift us and love us.   In the name of Jesus Christ amen. 4. The Testimony Of A 9-Year-Old…

March 24, 2013 by Ben Tanner

Eden11I would like to bear my testimony, and I know that the church is true,  I know that Jesus came to earth, and that Jesus was born.  I know that Joseph Smith restored the true church.  I know that the Book of Mormon and other scriptures are true, and that our current prophet is Thomas S. Monson.

I know that if we listen to the prophet we will know Heavenly Fathers instructions, and that through his teachings of the gospel we can be with him again.  I am very grateful for all that Heavenly Father has given us.  I am also grateful for his gospel.

I am grateful that through the atonement of Christ we can repent and be forgiven.  I know that the scriptures teach us the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  I would like to share an experience  that I had with angels.

One night I was having nightmares and I could not go back to sleep, so my dad said a prayer asking Heavenly Father to send angels to comfort me.  I could not see the angels but I could feel them beside me.  I was able to go back to sleep for the rest of the night.

I know that we can ask Heavenly Father through prayer for things that we need and he will help us.  I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

(I asked my 9-year old Eden to type her testimony here.  I’m one proud Papa.  She has been and will always be one of my favorite people ever, just sayin)

  5. Born Again Mormons… Alma Chapter 5

March 17, 2013 by Ben Tanner

statue2Do Mormons believe in being “Born Again”?  Absolutely.   We believe Jesus meant what He said in John 3:5-8.  A Mormon believes in at least four types of “Born Again” experiences:

    1. Your realization that God lives and your need for Jesus Christ (seeing the Kingdom of God)

    2. Baptism (being born of Water)

    3. Baptism of Fire (born of the Spirit)

    4. The continual renewal and rebirth experiences that come as we repent throughout our lives (Can you feel so now? Alma 5:26)

The the Book of Mormon the Prophet Alma asks:

14 And now behold, I ask of you, my brethren of the church, have ye aspiritually been bborn of God? Have ye received his image in your countenances? Have ye experienced this mighty cchange in your hearts?

15 Do ye exercise faith in the redemption of him who acreatedyou? Do you look forward with an eye of faith, and view this mortal body raised in immortality, and this corruption braised in incorruption, to stand before God to be cjudged according to the deeds which have been done in the mortal body?

16 I say unto you, can you imagine to yourselves that ye hear the voice of the Lord, saying unto you, in that day: Come unto me yeablessed, for behold, your works have been the works of righteousness upon the face of the earth?

17 Or do ye aimagine to yourselves that ye can lie unto the Lord in that day, and bsay—Lord, our works have been righteous works upon the face of the earth—and that he will save you?

18 Or otherwise, can ye imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of God with your souls filled with guilt and remorse, having a remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfectaremembrance of all your wickedness, yea, a remembrance that ye have set at defiance the commandments of God?

19 I say unto you, can ye look up to God at that day with a pure heart and clean hands? I say unto you, can you look up, having theaimage of God engraven upon your countenances?

20 I say unto you, can ye think of being saved when you have yielded yourselves to become asubjects to the devil?

21 I say unto you, ye will know at that day that ye cannot beasaved; for there can no man be saved except his bgarments are washed white; yea, his garments must be cpurified until they are cleansed from all stain, through the blood of him of whom it has been spoken by our fathers, who should come to redeem his people from their sins.

I testify that you can be renewed.  That you can be saved through the atonement of Jesus Christ.  Faith, Repentance, Baptism, The Holy Ghost, and Endurance to the end.

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen

  7. The Plan of Happiness Revisited…

February 10, 2013 by Ben Tanner

    950

Have you ever wondered how God plans to save all of this children, even those who never even get the chance to hear about Jesus Christ in this life?  Mormon’s believe that through modern prophets, the Lord has revealed the answer to this and many other questions.

Sometimes it’s good to step back from the details of life and remember who we are, why we are here, and where we are going.   For some people these questions seem unanswerable.   However, I testify that through modern day prophets the Lord has revealed the answers to these questions.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently released this video.  I hope you enjoy it:

Jesus Christ has made it possible for us to overcome all obstacles in our journey back to our heavenly home.   With His perfect love, Mercy, and Justice all wrongs will eventually be made right.  He can take you where ever you are today and heal your heart, strengthen your mind, and make more out of you than you could ever make of yourself.

  8. John Lennox: Common Objections Atheists Make

January 27, 2013 by Ben Tanner

John-LennoxIf you don’t know who John Lennox is, you’re missing out.  He is a professor of mathematics at Oxford University and a Christian apologist.  He is from Ireland, has a great sense of humor and is very fun to listen to.  He has met and debated Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens in public debate and in my opinion,  has pretty much decimated their arguments.  If you want some great reasons to believe in Jesus Christ, you might take the time to watch this:

I leave my personal witness with you also that Jesus really is the Christ.  He died for you.   He has restored His church today.  It’s the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  9. Christmas Memory

December 9, 2012 by Ben Tanner

My Mother, Mary Jane Duke Tanner, still directing ward Christmas programs at age 72

My Mother loves to sing, dance and perform. She is the youngest child of a youngest child, and I happen to be her youngest child. They say that youngest children like to be in the spot light and these three generations of youngest children are no exception.

My Mother has an exquisite singing voice. She is also a great dancer and all around performer.

Her father taught her sisters and her to sing and perform from the time they were very little. My Mother did the same with all of her children. Christmas was a very busy time for my family. This is because my Mom had us in just about any Christmas program available, and most of the time, she was in charge of directing the performance.

Most years we would travel around performing for schools, local church congregations, and even nursing homes. Each child in our family (all 7 kids) had a solo to sing. Incidentally, my Dad didn’t like to perform much, but he would do the narration and intermediate speaking parts.

Of all the places that we performed, I remember the nursing homes the most. The people we performed for didn’t seem like they even knew we were there. Yet my Mother treated each of them like they were dignitaries or celebrities. She made me feel like they were the most important people to perform for.

I was always happy to get my part done because I have to admit it was hard to sing and play the guitar in front of people who were suffering from dementia. But when my Mother would sing, their eyes would light up. Smiles would appear on their faces and many would start singing along.

She had taken the time to learn songs they would recognize. Songs that pre-dated her. This was a powerful thing. Instantly this room full of wheelchair bound people would be filled with voices singing. These people became people to me. I was often surprised to hear how good they could sing.

My Mother was so comfortable around them. She treated each of them with dignity and respect. And it wasn’t a show. It was real. You could feel it. The love could be felt deeply. You just knew my mother loved and respected them, and you knew that they felt the same way about her.

What a lesson to learn. I think this is why I feel so comfortable around elderly people. I enjoy learning about them and their stories. They have so much to give. They know things that you can’t learn in any other way than experience.

I hope I can pass this kind of love and respect on to my children. I’m forever thankful to my angel Mother for her example.

  10. Because I have been given much…

November 18, 2012 by Ben Tanner

Because I have been given much
    I too must give
Because of thy great bounty, Lord
    Each day I live
I shall divide my gifts from thee
With every brother that I see
Who has the need of help from me

    Because I have been sheltered
    Fed by thy good care
    I cannot see another’s lack
    And I not share
My glowing fire, my loaf of bread
    My roof’s safe shelter overhead
That he, too, may be comforted

Because of thy life’s mission, Lord
    I too will serve
I’ll leave the comfort of my home
    To teach thy word
I’ll seek thy sheep who’ve gone astray
And those who’ve never known the way
I will make thy work my work today

I shall give love to those in need
I’ll show that love by word and deed
Thus shall my thanks be thanks indeed
